Recently a big brand social media account was “apparently” hacked. One rogue tweet went out from the Alexander Keith’s Twitter account. Regardless of what happened, there is a lesson here for my Halifax social media participants.

Things to consider for keeping your social media accounts safe:

  • Use a strong password for each account. Do not use the same password twice. Make sure your passwords are safe and cannot be accessed by others.
  • These passwords need to be changed on a regular basis.
  • You should never use a password over again.
  • Use two-step verification where possible for each social media account. This makes your smartphone part of the log in process. Hackers may break into a social media and steal passwords and usernames; but they won’t get your smartphone.
  • Never send passwords via email; it’s not secure.
  • Be careful about what links you click on. One wrong click can open your social network to trouble.
  • Clear your web browser cache when you are done so no passwords are saved in your browser.
  • Make sure you know who has access to your social networks if others are helping out.
  • If you get notification of suspicious activity, change your password immediately
  • Don’t do anything stupid. I know this term can be over used, but it is good solid advice that was given out at a major police conference. It essentially means think about what you are about to post.

Halifax social media business branding
