Third party applications are feeling the pain of a strained relationship with Twitter; especially those who have placed Twitter in the app name.  It’s really about accessing Twitter’s API and how the third party is following or not following Twitter’s terms of agreement.

My favorite product Tweetdeck could be effected. Their new ability to post well past the 140 character limit could put them on shaky ground.  It appears that Hootsuite has made their peace with Twitter. Will other applications follow suite?

One thing I know for sure is that Twitter is the big man and Twitter can call the shots. This may cause a change across the landscape as apps race to be compliant with Twitter or lose the API, so to speak. Only time will tell.

In the meantime, keep an eye on the social media news to see how the battle goes. Will Tweetdeck survive the road ahead? I like Tweetdeck. I hope they do. What do you think is ahead for Twitter and the third party apps?

Note as of 1:53 PM Atlantic Monday:

UberTwitter and Twitroyd have complied with Twitter’s terms of use. On Mashable.com, Jolie O’Dell wrote… “After being briefly banned for policy violations, UberMedia apps UberSocial (formerly UberTwitter) and Twidroyd, the popular Android Twitter client, are back online.” I am still waiting to see what will happen with Tweetdeck. Since they are allowing tweets beyond 140 characters, they will have to change or loss the Twitter API.
