Third party applications are feeling the pain of a strained relationship with Twitter; especially those who have placed Twitter in the app name. It’s really about accessing Twitter’s API and how the third party is following or not following Twitter’s terms of agreement.
My favorite product Tweetdeck could be effected. Their new ability to post well past the 140 character limit could put them on shaky ground. It appears that Hootsuite has made their peace with Twitter. Will other applications follow suite?
One thing I know for sure is that Twitter is the big man and Twitter can call the shots. This may cause a change across the landscape as apps race to be compliant with Twitter or lose the API, so to speak. Only time will tell.
In the meantime, keep an eye on the social media news to see how the battle goes. Will Tweetdeck survive the road ahead? I like Tweetdeck. I hope they do. What do you think is ahead for Twitter and the third party apps?
Note as of 1:53 PM Atlantic Monday:
UberTwitter and Twitroyd have complied with Twitter’s terms of use. On Mashable.com, Jolie O’Dell wrote… “After being briefly banned for policy violations, UberMedia apps UberSocial (formerly UberTwitter) and Twidroyd, the popular Android Twitter client, are back online.” I am still waiting to see what will happen with Tweetdeck. Since they are allowing tweets beyond 140 characters, they will have to change or loss the Twitter API.
I don’t think it will cause any super huge problems. The companies that are at risk wouldn’t exist without Twitter, so I don’t think it’ll take much thought for them to fix and adhere or simply go away. Like you said, Twitter is the big man, and they will “throw their weight around” when they have to.
@jmatthicks It will be interesting to see what Tweetdeck does with the 140 character limit, that they are currently violating.
I would love to see Tweetdeck come to mobile like Hotsuite. I have a Blackberry. I might have to wait a while Jeremy. Thanks for the connect Jeremy.
@Alpha_Computer Is Tweetdeck not on a Blackbery platform??
Tweetdeck is not unfortunately on the BB platform. iPhone and Android, but not BB.
@JMattHicks No it is not. Tweetdeck is having a go of it with Twitter these days since they are breaking the terms of service. Hootsuite on an iPhone or Android sounds real good these days. Maybe we could convince Hootsuite to make an app for Blackberry 🙂
@Alpha_Computer I think a petition of sorts is in order!
Jeremy, looks like I have a lead on getting a Blackberry Playbook ahead of the pack. This will open up a new world for my BB. I will give you a heads up when it happens 🙂
