One of the questions I get asked a lot by business owners in Halifax, Dartmouth and the rest of Nova Scotia, deals with the amount of time that one should being using social media throughout the day. How much time should we be really spending on social media for our business?

3 things we need to think about regarding our social media usage:

  1. We need to be visible throughout the day at different times. Our posts should not be confined to a single time period. People will not see them in their News Feeds if we do not spread our social media post out at different times throughout the day. We need to consider having posts in the morning, the afternoon and into the evening.
  2. People check their Twitter and Facebook in different time zones. When we are going to bed in Halifax, others may just be getting up India. To reach them, we need to have tweets that are visible when they are checking their social media networks. If our business is more than a brick and mortar local store, than we need to consider different time zones.
  3. Your social media should be split up into different segments. Maybe six 10 minute segments will give you great visibility throughout the day.  What ever we choose, out posts have to be spread out. The only real question is how much time do we want to spend on our social media.

Regardless of how we are going to do your social media, it’s going to take time. There is no way around this. I suggest that you spread your social media efforts out throughout the day for greater visibility and impact. I recommend at least 1 hour per day to start seeing a benefit to your business. If we want social media to give us visibility, then we need to have a presence throughout the day. Fortunately, there are social media tools that can help us with this problem. Hootsuite and Buffer can help you.

If you have any questions, please ask.

Here’s to a great day of business for you.
