As I look back on what I wrote on June 11, 2013, I am amazed at what really happened around Edward Snowden, the NSA, and our security, and what is currently happening. Here is what I wrote.

Social media profiling, is it really happening? This past week stories around PRISM, the American government’s part in our surveillance and the fact that several social media networks have been used for such is alarming; but not unexpected.

Many of us already knew that our posts on the Internet and our communications were being recorded and monitored. But what does this really say about our times? Are we being profiled for the coming days ahead for some unknown purpose?

Jeff Brown working at the OfficeI really don’t write a lot about government surveillance, X-File like stuff and the sort; but we are starting to enter into some really weird times. And these weird times deserve our proper consideration as to how we are going to move forward safely.

We are seeing stories on the Internet of people saying that they don’t really care that the government is monitoring their social media, their phone calls, and their emails, and so on. What is this really say about us and what we think about our online and off-line privacy? Is the threat of terrorism surely enough to cause us to give up many of our rights and liberties to our government?

Government leaders are telling us that they’re not listening to our phone conversations, trying to persuade us that we don’t need to be concerned about what’s happening. But this we know to be true, a lot of data about what we do, who we are and what we think has and is being collected that can be used later for many different purposes.

Sure governments can try to reassure us that everything is good and copacetic. When you see things like the IRS and other subtle news releases happening, it really makes you wonder what the true intent of all this data mining is about. Do they really need all our data? Why is our data being stored after it has been analyzed for terrorism purposes? Are we being profiled for the future?

We live in interesting times where news is breaking over and over again with dramatic stories. I just watched a video about Paul Hillyer, the Canadian ex-defense minister, talk about the reality of aliens. We see videos regarding threats on North America by different groups. Where is this all heading and why are these things all happening?

I know that social media is playing a key role in all of this. And in the back of my mind, I really do have to wonder about what is happening with all our social media information and posts. Is what we are saying going to be used against us someday soon? It really won’t be hard to see where we stand on issues because we have already declared them on your social media many times.

Should we care about what we write our social media in the days ahead? I certainly think so. What you put your social media could very well come back and bite you on the butt one day. If you have ever wondered if big brother is watching your social media, wonder no more. This is the new reality of which we live in.

Might you be declared an enemy of the state? This might sound a little alarmist; but this very well could be the direction that we are heading in where what you say can be used against you in a court of law. Maybe even in a secret court. One thing for sure, there’s no question that Big Brother is watching. The only question is what will Big Brother see?
