You know that you need to market your business to your customers. Whether you do business in Halifax, Dartmouth, Truro, Toronto or elsewhere, you need to get your message out in front of your customers. Your big concern is the amount of time it will take. Will there be a Return on Your Investment?
First of all, let me encourage you and let you know that you can do social media throughout the day. You just have to be strategic in how you do your social media. Many of the businesses I train are small to medium businesses where owners and employees are already extremely busy. We are learning to do more with less. But the idea of more “More” makes businesses nervous. Many say they are just too busy to add-on anything more.
The reality of today is that the traditional marketing methods where you pay others to market for you is failing. That is the new reality. Traditional media is faltering big time. So let me ask you this question…. “What are you going to do?” Marketing requires one of two things: (1) money to pay someone else to do it, or (2) time, your time. The choice is yours. And by the way, your time is valuable. It’s not free.
So if the marketing is going to fall to you, here are some thoughts I hope will help you get started in the right direction.
Let’s look at your time throughout the day. When can you do social media marketing? Available moments could include:
- Waiting in the doctor’s office
- Waiting for the person ahead to go through with their groceries
- Waiting for your next appointment to be available
- Waiting for your next client
- In reality, any moment where you can check your social media period
You really have to look at how you are using your time. Let me suggest that you do a general audit of how you spend your time throughout the day. In reality, most of us are less busy than we really think. Our problem is more organization than time. We simply do not swim smoothly through our day. It’s more like slapping on the water movements. If this is the case, you can do much better.
The good news for most of us is that time is available for social media. You just have to make it a priority for your business and organize what you do throughout the day. Maybe we could get someone to do the mundane stuff for our business while we do the things we are best at. That’s the “Delegation” word. The rule I heard spoken one day is this… “If someone can do what you are doing at 80% or better, than they are doing the task”. You need to focus on what really makes you money. Buying paperclips might not be the best use of your time.
When it comes to social media, there are things that you can do to help you become more effective and more strategic with your social media. For example, some scheduling of your posts can help you gain visibility throughout the day. Having a smart phone to monitor responses as you go about your day will help; as long as you know how to effectively use your phone. It all comes down to how knowledgeable you are with your social media and your devices.
Let me encourage you and tell you that you can do it. Get some training and stop spinning your wheels. Learn how to do your social media effectively. Learn how to make your smart phone sing. Master your marketing environment and make things happen.
Let me wish you a great day in business today. I will be cheering you on. If you have a question, please ask.
Are you using your time wisely when it comes to your social media? People tell me they have no time to do it. Just let me follow them around and I can find lots of “Down” moments to get the job done. Using social media for your business requires a greater level of commitment.
If you are a business and you are using social media, you have to find time for it. Excuses don't count here 🙂
