She owned several cottages that she rented out to tourists and visitors in the Shelburne, Nova Scotia area. It looked like it was going to be a terrible Summer. Then she discovered how to make a Facebook Page bring in customers into her cottages.
Whispering Waves Cottages in located in the Shelburne, Nova Scotia area. There are several cottages in one prime location, with a great view of the Ingomar Harbour. It has a real nice view and the cottages are super. There is even a golf course located just down the road. The best of both worlds.
I received a call to help them with their business. The problem was this: the cottages were in need of repair and the previous manager had done a real job at damaging the reputation of the cottages. The new manager was in the process of fixing the cottages. They were doing a super job. But how would we fix the reputation part?
I traveled down to the cottages and met with the manager. After looking over all the great work that had been done to the cottages, I realized that we needed to get this information out to perspective guests. So I created a Facebook Page for Whispering Waves Cottages. I showed the manager how to reach out and engage with people. She was a natural at connecting with others.
Long story short, within 2 to 3 weeks, she had all the cottages booked for the Summer. I asked her on a scale of 1 to 10 how important Facebook was to getting people into the cottages. She replied with a 9.
As guests stayed there, they posted photos of their vacation at Whispering Waves Cottages. They commented on how much they loved their time there. The manager was a real people person, and I understood why. She makes you feel so welcomed.
And it is still continuing to do well. If you are looking for a great get away place, and you have not robbed a bank, I recommend Whispering Waves Cottages.
A Facebook Page made the difference in this business. It can help yours as well.

What really made a difference in this business example was the manager’s willingness to reach out and engage people in conversations. She spoke French and invited people from Quebec as well. She had a big friend list and she worked that list to let people know that the cottages were under new management and that they had been renovated.
- She let her friends know what she was doing in status updates about the cottages; no hard selling.
- She included a link from her Facebook Page occasionally to help her friends make the connection to her business page.
- She posted pictures to entice people to visit the Facebook Page.
- It only took about 2 to 3 weeks of doing this to fill the whole schedule for the Summer.
So what can we learn? The “What am I doing?” wall posts in the Facebook Profile can be helpful for creating interest in your Facebook Page. Remember no hard selling. Selling is done on the Facebook Page; not your Facebook Profile User Account. She created a buzz and worked any conversation that took place. When someone commented, she answered back. You can be successful in your business endeavors as well.
So get going and I will be pulling for you. ~Jeff
