Leading in social media requires influence. Influence is built over a period of time as you build relationships with others. You must also be willing to invest in your personal development to achieve greater influence.

As I was traveling to a training workshop for my own personal development, I turned on a John Maxwell CD. John talked about influence, personal development and leadership. As I listened, I could see the implications for leading in social media.

Leading in social media requires influence. Influence requires relationship. To be a great leader in social media, you have to be a great connector. You need to make great relationships. This takes time.

Furthermore, to be a great leader in social media, you have to invest in yourself. Personal development is a must. You can not draw water from an empty cup. I am currently taking a 6 week facilitating workshop to make me a better trainer. I constantly read and converse with friends on blue ocean concepts.

So how are you investing your time? Is there any there for your own personal development? Are you spending the time you need to develop deeper relationships?
