It’s hard enough marketing on Facebook on a good day. Now that Facebook has changed its algorithm, the game has only got harder for many to market on Facebook. You have to be smart when you post on your Facebook Page to have it show up in the Facebook News Feed of others as a Top Story.

The big problem is that many people do not know that the default setting for the News Feed is Top Stories. Thus they are forced to consume Top Stories only. Once they know how to switch to “Most Recent”, then they can enjoy more of their friend’s stories.

Out of curiosity, I ask every social media program participant if they know about the setting for switching from Top Stories to Most Recent. Almost every time, participants do not know about that setting. If they don’t know, it’s a pretty good bet that many others, like their customers, are still in the dark as well.

So this is a real problem for marketeers. If they cannot create Top Stories, they will not get their Facebook posts seen by potential customers. It is that simple. It is critical to plan to create Top Stories when you post on Facebook. If you don’t give every post the best chance to do well, you are going to have a tough time marketing on Facebook.

One great thing to consider to help you get started is to look at what is already present in the Top Story section of your Facebook News Feed. You should try to understand what shows up and why. Try to get a feel for what your competition will be on Facebook. This will help you do better.
