What others say about you can be good or bad for your business. If you are giving great service, you should be expecting good comments and good buzz.

It’s when bad things are going around, that you have to try to correct them quickly. But how do you know when bad things are being said on the Internet? You have to have some form of social media monitoring in place.

A service like Radian6 can monitor all of your social media for you in one place. I met a girl from the Calgary Police Service who was using Radian6. She showed the group, at a police workshop that I was speaking at, how Radian6 worked. She was monitoring everything she could regarding her police service.

Small business has to have some social media monitoring as well. The degree that a small business can monitor their social media depends on how much they want to spend per month. The more they have to spend, the better they can monitor what is being said about them. Small business can choose their level of social media monitoring. When they see negative situations out on the Internet, they can fix them in a timely fashion.

When they see great things being said on the Internet, they can try to create even greater buzz by joining in on the conversations.

But if you are not monitoring your social media, you are like a ship without a rudder. You will not get to take advantage of any wind coming your way; good or bad.

Here are some thoughts for my Silver Level Members on what they can do to monitor what is being said about them on the Internet.

  1. You can use Google Alerts to monitor key words and your name. An alert is emailed to you in your Gmail. This is a great option. (Free)
  2. You can set up a search in Twitter on keywords or your name. You will have to check your Twitter from time to time. (Free)
  3. There are other monitor applications that you can use and pay for. Try the two above first to see if they will work for you.

Regardless of what you do, you should do something to keep an eye on what is being said about you. You need to respond to others in a timely manner.
