I went to play the songs off my phone on my Honda car stereo, and there was nothing there. Why could I not access my music from my phone? I felt my phone holder, and the phone was not there. I was approximately 1/2 hour away from home and I heading to Halifax to deliver training. For a moment I felt lost. Then I looked in the coffee cup holder. I had put it there and forgot that I had done so. Talk about relief when I realized I had it.
What would happen if you forgot your phone at home while you were on the way to work? Maybe you do not have the time to go back and get it? Could you make things work?
For me, I started thinking about Plan B. What would I do without my phone? Could I use my iPad until I got home? I would have to find a way to function. Fortunately I did find my phone in the coffee cup holder i the car.
The way things are going in this world, we need to be thinking about having a Plan B for our business and our devices. What if there is a system wide cell service outage? Our businesses need to keep marching onward.
Somethings that might help you prepare:
- If you are using an online password keeper, do you have them printed off and stored in a safe place? Don’t wait till the site goes down before you print them off.
- If you are using two-step verification for your social networks, are these codes you can print off to get you out of a bind? Some may have them while others might not.
- Can you access your email everywhere, even when you don’t have your phone with you? Do you have an alternative means of accessing your email? Most email providers provide some sort on online email access.
- Do you have a means of accessing your address book? Are your contacts online? If they are online, please make sure they are secure.
We can never take anything for granted in business. We should be thinking of a Plan B scenario; so that when it happens, we are not stopped in our tracks.

I love the 5 “P”‘s – Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performances. I learned this while I was in the military. I learned to prepare for anything and everything.
As a business, we need to do the same thing and stop taking things for granted. One of these days, something is going to happen and we might be lost if we have not set a Plan B into place.
So for today, start thinking about what you would do if “_____________”. You can fill in the blank.
So here’s to proper planning and a great day of business.
