Here is my first video chat with Rob Cairns on Facebook Video Chat. We encountered some tech issues along the way.
My comments on issues along the way:
- We encountered a video driver issue that prevented Rob’s external mike form working. This was a problem on his computer; probably unrelated to Facebook Video Chat process.
- I had to switch from my external video to my internal video. I was able to change back to external video after. Most people only have one mic/video and should not encounter this.
- There was an echo which may have come from my Camtasia screen recording of the event. Rob sounded good when the call was made.
- If you encounter a problem, many times a computer reboot can fix them.
So far the video chat is a one to one only call. You cannot do a group call. This will help you focus on the person calling. I can see this being a great option for a business call. I hoped you liked the video. Any questions, please ask.
Further note, Rob tried to call again and Facebook Video Chat was unavailable. They must be going through growing pains.
Well, I can see Facebook is trying really hard to start integrating everything they can, but I’m not really impressed with this feature! I was more impressed with their new tagging abilities for pictures compared to their new video chat option to be honest. Plus the inability to do conference video calls is a drawback. But at least Facebook continues to expand their features so I can’t complain with that!

@StephRWong It would be cool if they could do multi vid chat in Facebook. Google+ and Facebook will be going at it hard in the days ahead for your business. ^Jeff
@Alpha_Computer Yeah it’s going to be FB vs. G+ from now on (at least until one wins out). I’m sure Facebook will eventually get multi-vid soon just to keep up with their rising competitor at least.
@StephRWong They need multi-vid to stay up with Google+. One thing that would be cool is first they have a Skype button beside contact names in our news feed instead of off to the right. That takes up a lot of real estate.
@Alpha_Computer Yes that would definitely push Facebook ahead of the race. Seems like video calling is down on Facebook for now though! Guess they’ve decided to step it up
@StephRWong I am waiting to see what’s next with Facebook. I would not call them down and out at this point. I bet some serious Google+ kicking is coming down the road.
@Alpha_Computer Oh what I meant by down was that they took away the video calling? At least when I checked it wasn’t available.
@StephRWong LOL Stephanie. Hopefully they are working on improvements.
In the days ahead, we will see more competition between Google+ and Facebook. Competition is better for the marketplace.
