Some words can increase your ability to get retweeted by others. Others can be like bug repellent and get you ignored.
I like reading what Dan Zarrella’s @DanZarrella writes about in social media. I find his writing style easy to follow as well. His comments on how to get more retweets are very insightful. Dan has done a lot of research on what it takes to get retweeted. Today, I want to help you take your Twitter farther.
Success all comes down to writing for the end user and not yourself. For example, using words like “work” from “home” is boring. According to Dan’s eBook “Zarrella’s Hierarchy of Contagiousness: The Science, Design, and Engineering of Contagious Ideas“, words like “game“, “going“, “lol“, and “watching” will not help you get retweeted. Why? They are about you; not your listeners.
So what works well? Well, words that mean something to your listeners. Words like “you“, “please“, “free“, “help” and “how to“. These are words that will help your tweet get retweeted according to Dan Zarrella. This book list several great words to help you do better on Twitter and get more retweets.
So remember when you are tweeting and throwing links out on Twitter, please make sure that your tweets are audience/follower focused. Our tweets need to be helpful; and might I say, encouraging as well. If our followers are helped by a tweet, then they are most likely to share that tweet with others; thus a retweet!
So for today’s home work, I want you really thinking more about what you put out on Twitter. Ask yourself, “Would you retweet your tweet?”
And by the way, I recommend Dan’s book if you want to learn how to do better on Twitter.
