Social good can greatly enrich our communities. As a business, we can do a lot of good in our communities in Halifax, Dartmouth, Truro, Toronto and elsewhere. As a light in our community, our businesses can make social good happen and enrich the lives of others around us.

So what is social good? Is it just sponsoring teams? Is it helping an organization do better? Social good is much more than this. It’s an attitude that a business has. That attitude says that the business wants to make the community better because that business exists. A business needs to generate income for the owner and the employees. That’s a given. But it should have a purpose in the community well beyond the process of money. It’s about making a difference in the community.

For me, it was the creation of the Crime Stoppers Leave A tip tab. I wanted to help Crime Stoppers make our communities safer and more successful. As a business, I wanted to help people feel safer, and I wanted businesses to operate without the fear of crime affecting them. Crime costs us all, but when it comes to business, crime really takes a big bite out of their profits. Whether it is shop lifting or robbery, crime affect the business and it affects the customer.

I believe that people are now expecting businesses to do more than just take in money. People want to see them performing social good. Our customers will make their buying decisions based to some degree on what we do in our community. We don’t want to be seen as just TAKERS. We need to be seen as GIVERS as well. Giving can vary in appearance. Sure it can be money, but it can also be given as time. Maybe you volunteer in your community. Maybe you go out of your way as a business to supply a certain community need.

So what can you do to impact the lives of others around you? Only you can answer this question. Here’s to you finding a great solution and making a significant impact on your community.

So here’s to a great day of business for you. I am cheering you on 😀
