Not everyone can be a Chris Brogan or a Saul Colt. They certainly don’t want you to even try to be them. They have been gifted with certain abilities and talents. They are great at what they do. What they want from you is simply this; “be yourself“. Only you can be the best you possible. And when it comes to social media, you will get the maximum results when you are “just who you are“.
When you are yourself, you will represent your company professionally over time. This will help people get to know who they are dealing with and what they can expect. Now the amount of detailed information you give out is up to you and your comfort level. The part about being honest is simply this: share what you feel comfortable with, and do not worry about the rest. Don’t try to fake your abilities or misrepresent your company to others. People will respect you for who you are. As you grow in your position and abilities, people will see that, and respond accordingly.
Here is what the Ford Motor Company says in the social media “Digital Participation Guidelines“:
“If the conversation relates to our business or our industry, you should identify yourself as working for Ford Motor Company in the content of your post/comment/other content. Not only is this the ethical thing to do, but in some countries, like the U.S., there may be personal liability under Federal Trade Commission regulations if you don’t. Best practice is always to be honest about who you are without giving out detailed personal information.”
Pretty good advice. So don’t try to be who you are not. Represent yourself and your company just as you are. Grow in your abilities, and your influence will grow over time with others.
