Wednesday was the first day of the 40 hour social media training program for real estate agents in Dartmouth. Before I began the “Why” of social media section of the training, I decided to do a check up on their laptops and see how safe they were.
The first thing we checked was to see if the Public folder sharing setting was turned off on their laptops. If you travel around and have this setting on, then people on that network can access files in the Public folders on your computer. You want to be invisible; and having this setting turned on does not help.
We then checked their Outlook Email program to see if the Preview Pane was turned on. The Preview Pane, in my view, should be turned off in the Inbox. This should be done so that an Email with a virus does not get opened automatically. This could ruin the day. I also discussed safe connecting practices for their laptops. We talked about secure and unsecured network connections. We also talked about backing up files and folders.
Before we ever started the social media training, I wanted to make sure they were being safe for the road ahead. Social media can stick your neck further out the window so to speak. And nobody wants to get their head lopped off. Then we began to talk about the “Why” aspect of social media. It is important to know why one is going to use social media. They have to know that it takes time to build momentum. Success does not happen over night. And I don’t promise that either.
Unfortunately, the afternoon class was cut short by a snow storm. It was time for the 1 hour plus drive back to Truro. I suggested to someone that we have the rest of the classes in Florida. I don’t know if they will go for that. Well, at least we are off and running. The participants really enjoyed the two sessions. They seem to be getting a good understanding of the big picture.
I am looking forward to seeing them do well with social media. Let the lead generations begin. I tried to get a commission on their sales. But that’s not going to happen. Some real estate rule. Maybe I can negotiate a coffee? What do you think?
