If your Facebook account Profile privacy settings are not set properly, it can cause your business grief. If identity theft happens, your mind will not be at work. You will not be all that you can be.

This past Monday morning, we checked several Facebook profile privacy settings in the social media workshop. Many participants had their own privacy settings on Public. Their personal information was set out for everyone to see. This is not how we want to use Facebook; especially when we want to create a Facebook Page and create greater visibility for us and our business.

Facebook is becoming a haven for scammers and trouble makers. Leaving personal information open to public eyes just makes you a greater risk for identity theft and other bad things.

So we changed all the Profile settings away from “Public” to “Friends“. I encouraged workshop participants to watch who they become friends with on Facebook in the future. We also looked at best practices for staying safe on our devices and on social media. As business owners, we need to learn how to limit our risk.

May I encourage us all to remember this: we should never take our privacy settings on Facebook for granted. We need to set them to our own level of comfort. Furthermore, we should also understand the ramifications for each setting that we use.

So what is our walk-a-way for today? If you have never checked your Facebook Profile privacy settings or you are not sure what they are set at, go there now and change them.
