Just think about how many emails you send each day. Want a free and an effective way to promote your business social media? Promote your social media in your email signature. It’s free and it’s easy. And chances are, you send a lot of emails.

Here’s some thoughts to help you do better with email signatures:

  1. You can use graphics and images to have your receiver click on, but many email programs, by default, don’t allow images to show until the user has given permission for them to be displayed. What if the receiver does not allow images to be displayed? Then they will not see these social media icons and they will not click on them. A wasted effort.
  2. As simple as they look, text hyperlinks are not hindered like images or graphics. They are ready to be clicked on when viewed. They are well understood as click points as well.
  3. Most email programs allow this option. If you are not sure if your program allows this, just Google “email signature” for your email program. It should give you a step by step “How to” demo.

Tips for setting them up:

  1. Make sure there is a space between words so that the viewer can clearly determine where each one starts and ends. You can also use a “|” spacer to put in between them like this: Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn | Google+…. for example.
  2. When making the text a hyperlink, copy the URL [web address] directly from the page you want them to go. Don’t type it in because you might make a typo.
  3. Test your hyperlinks by emailing yourself first to work out all the bugs.

Bonus: And by the way, here is one of the most annoying things I have seen in email signatures… “People leave out the office phone number or cell number“. Don’t make the receiver go through a phone book on an online directory. They might discover your competition is easier to find and connect with them. Always included your phone number in your email signature.

I hope this helps you get off on the right foot and helps you get your email signature started.

Remember, to make a hyperlink, here’s what you generally do:

  1. Copy the URL for your social network. Go to your profile, in most cases.
  2. Highlight the word or words that you want to make a hyper link for.
  3. Find and click on the create hyperlink button or option.
  4. Paste the URL into the place where it is supposed to go.
  5. Accept the changes.
