Social Media Strategy – The Art Of Simple

You are either on your smart phone, or on your laptop, and you’re wondering what to do next. This is where having a social media strategy determines your ease of marketing success.

Social Media Strategy – The Problem:

The problem I see here is this, many people have been shown what they can do with social media, but few have been shown how to get started using social media with a strategy. It’s great to know that social media can do this and that. But what I see frustrating people today is this: they don’t know where to start.

I hear people asking this question after they get set up…”What do I do next?” Not having a social media strategy will frustrate people. They will fail to see the true value of social media and give up. We have to remember that people are still struggling with technology also.

Social Media Strategy – The Concept:

So if you are a business owner, an employee, or a social media trainer, here is my main advice for you: “Keep it simple“.

There is so many social media networks out there that can be used. But that does not mean that you have to use it all. When you are starting, or even trying to make social media work for you, stick with a few applications and get good at them. It’s better to be great with a few, than poor with them all.

Also try to keep your social media strategy simple as well. Try to figure out exactly what you want and determine how you can get it. Don’t create complex strategies that no one can follow. Keep them simple so that viewers can understand what you want.

Social Media Strategy – Developing the Strategy:

One of the things but I tell participants in my workshops is to figure out what they want. It is important to determine the outcome before they ever build a social media post in the first place. Simply put, if you don’t know where you’re going, it’s hard to get started.

For example, if you want customers to fill out a contact form on your website, you have to develop a plan to drive traffic to that contact form. In this case the plan will involve social media.

So we need to start off with a social media post that will cause people to click the link to the contact form on your website. We have to develop a strategy and write in such a way that will inspire people click that link.

Often, I will tell my workshop participants to work backwards from the contact form. Yes, all the way to the very start of the social media post. It is much easier to work backwards toward the original post because you always see what comes just before the spot that you are currently on.

So let’s say you are Bud, and you want to increase your membership numbers. But how does Bud get there?

Bud really wants people to buy memberships. In order for people to buy a membership, Bud has to meet with them and sell them the membership. But before that can happen, Bud needs to convince them of the value of membership.

Before this can happen, Bud needs them to go to the membership area of the website, find the phone number and call him. Before the website comes a social media post.

Before the social media post happens, Bud needs to come up with a target audience and a message for that social media post. Before this happens, Bud needs to figure out what he wants as an end result.

I trust that you see that strategies are important for determining the desired outcome.

Social Media Strategy – The Summary:

I hope that you now realize that posting on social media, and hoping that something will happen, is not the best strategy for your business or your marketing. It is always best to think about what you want to happen, and then build a strategy around that result. It all comes down to this, think before you post and know what you want to happen.
