You might see someone that you want to connect with on Twitter. You reach out to them. And there’s nothing coming back. It’s the reality of Twitter.

Jeff Brown Social Media Speaker Halifax DartmouthI have been very fortunate to connect with a lot of super people over my 4 years on Twitter and other social media sites. I have tried to connect with as many engagers as possible over that time. But the reality is this: not everyone who you reach out to will connect back.

You still have to try to connect with the peeps on Twitter you want to. But it is not a certainty that they will connect with you. Just because you follow them, does not mean that they have to follow you.

One of my guidelines for following people on Twitter is this… “they have to be engaging others on Twitter”. I don’t follow back broadcasters. I will connect with anyone who will engage me. They don’t have to have large numbers or be famous. They just have to want to converse on Twitter.

One thing my Twitter friend @MarkShaw says is this…”If you are not going to engage others on Twitter…stay off of Twitter”. I could not agree more. There is so much noise on Twitter from people simply pushing out information in one direction only. Twitter is a social site. This implies a two way conversation.

I would love to tell you that everyone you reach out to will reach back to you. If I told you this, I would be lying. Twitter is like a pub. You have to be there on a regular basis and engaging with the locals. Then they will trust you and talk with you.

So do not be discouraged if people don’t follow you back or talk with you. Just move on. There are lots of great peeps in the Twitterverse to connect with and have fun with.
