How long should your tweet be? We will talk about this in the Halifax social media programs this week. Length does matter when it comes to Twitter and using it for business.

You should keep it under 120 characters so that one of your text gets cut off when your tweet is retweeted. One reason for this is that when someone retweets you, none of your original tweet will be truncated or cut off.

Another reason to keep your tweet to 120 or less is this; you allow retweeters room to add comments. Maybe they really agree with what you just tweeted and they want to tell others why they are sharing your tweet.

Allowing for circumstances like this can help you do better on Twitter. Just think of it this way, how many times have you tried to retweet something and found negative numbers in your Twitter counter? [See graphic above]. I know we can do a retweet directly on Twitter.com, and it will go. But when we use other applications like Hootsuite, length does matter.

Remember, you are working with the masses on Twitter. The lowest common denominator does matter. You have to give everyone a chance to retweet you. If you go too long, this will not happen.

So as you go about composing your tweets, think about how long you make them. Give people a little extra to add room to work with. It might delight you to see what others might add to your original tweet when they share it. Take this one thought today and action it into success.

So here’s to a great day in business. I am cheering you on. If you have any questions, please ask.
