Marketing your business on Facebook seems to be getting more frustrating for many of my friends in Halifax and elsewhere. There are some real concerns that many have about what is happening with post visibility. Here’s what to do.

Business wants to create visibility, and Facebook seems to be taking visibility away. The new Facebook algorithm change has brought a lot of frustration to many Facebook page owners; to the point that many have stopped posting on their Pages. I see this happening more and more with my Halifax friends; and I understand their frustration. Here is what I am seeing myself with the numbers Facebook is reporting to me:

Notice that the visibility reported is 3, while myself and 4 others have “Liked” the post. I think that if you LIKED the post, changes are you have SEEN the post. Facebook must be struggling with the math part. Here’s another example from many I have:

Facebook-Page-Visibility-error

Here we have Facebook reporting 3 views while the LIKEs add up to 6, excluding myself. Facebook seems to do this on a regular basis. And it is frustrating me as well as many of my friends who have Facebook Pages. No one whats to spend a significant amount of time to only get 3 views. It is as if Facebook wants to keep the numbers low so we will have to PROMOTE posts to increase Page and post visibility. Now I am a fan of promoting posts, every now and then, but not all the time.

So what can we do to gain greater ORGANIC [non paid] post visibility? Here are some thoughts that I hope will help you do better at creating visibility on your Facebook Page:

  1. Make sure you do your best to create a TOP STORY post right from the start. Visibility is gained when you create a Top Story post.
  2. Make sure you would even share your post. Now I am not saying share your Page posts to your Profile all the time. But what I am saying is that your post has to be so good that you would not mind sharing it with your friends by sharing it on your Profile. If you don’t what to share your posts, who else will. Make sure you make your posts share worthy.
  3. Check your Facebook Page Insights to determine what post types your fans actually like. You might think pictures, while your fans want video. Check your stats. After all, your Page is for your fans to LIKE, not for you to scratch some marketing itch. Give your fans what they want and they will do the rest of your marketing for you.
  4. If you promote a post, make sure you have 2 or 3 great posts lined up to go directly after the promoted post. These posts can gain more visibility from the enhanced visibility created by your promoted post. Don’t post and run away after the promoted post. Use that increased visibility to get some more organic post love.
  5. Make sure you post when your fans are online in the greatest number. Again, check your Insights for the facts.
  6. Post on a regular basis. Posting twice a day is not too much. Post once every two days is a waste of time I believe. If you post too infrequently, the Facebook algorithm will tear you and your fans away from each other.
  7. Be prepared to put the work in. It’s either post smartly organically or promote your posts.

As you can see, there are some things you can do to help create better organic visibility. You will still have to promote some of your posts. I am not against this. But you should be able to create some greater visibility for your organic [non paid] posts if you post smartly.

So here’s to a great day in business for you. I am cheering you on.
