Once again the “Script Kiddies” have reported a misleading event. This time it was a false report that an airliner had crashed into Ground Zero in New York. Did you retweet the tweet and spread falsehood?

This past Friday, September 9, 2011, the NBC News Twitter account was hacked into by the “Script Kiddies”. Here are the tweets that were posted:

NBC News Twitter Account Hacked IntoIt is obvious that those people that hacked into The NBC News Twitter account did not realize the severity of their actions. They knowingly posted false information that could have caused a lot of panic and accidents, as people tried to respond to what they believed was true.

When you are not careful and check to see if a tweet is true before you pass it along, you contribute to the situation. I think of what happened when Steve Jobs was falsely reported to have gone into the hospital. Apple stock dropped. It recovered later that day.

You should not retweet a tweet with a link in it that you have not personally checked out. The link could be porn, for example; because someone’s Twitter account got hacked and started spitting out garbage. So make sure you check the link out in a tweet before you ever retweet it and share it.

If you retweet tweets with links in them that you have not checked out, it might bite you on the backside and cause you to lose followers. Make sure you visit the link to make sure it is good and that the information is suitable to share.

You also need to check information that may pertain to a disaster out with a reputable news source. Check to make sure it is true. If it’s good, share it. But don’t be caught sending out false information.

When you retweet a tweet, make sure you ask people to re-share it. You might also add the reason why you think that this tweet should be shared. Tell peeps why it is share worthy by explaining what makes this tweet great.

And by the way, if you have any questions, please ask me. They could make a great blog post.
